Making and meeting goals…

On November 18 I ran my 7th half marathon this was by far my best outing yet. I was going for a sub 2:00, that was the goal I would have been happy with a 2:05; even a 2:10 would have been my best in seven tries. To be honest this was the first time I put in the training effort, ate right, and even got the right amount of rest.

I started my training about 12 weeks before the race, I used Hal Higdon training program I found online and stuck to it to the ‘T”. The first week of training was about 15 miles; and the week before race I gradually got up to about 26 miles. The training consisted of three event races (a 5K, 10K, and 15K), speed workouts, tempo runs, weight training, hill repeats and tons of stretching. Sunday’s were all the long run days, I would try to train at a 8:50 pace (9:05 will get you a sub 2:00). Training is tough, with the help of a few friends, colleagues, social media buddies they all helped with the days I wanted to phone my run in.

On race day, I felt nervous and excited; only because I was ready. I was supposed to get up an hour early to do yoga stretching that the race coordinators provided for the runners…didn’t make it (the race started at 7a.m. pssst). We walk to the race and already there was a sea of people (40,000 plus), we started in a slower corral which cause that first mile to be the slowest.

My miles broke down like this:

  • Mile 1: 9:17
  • Mile 2 8:13
  • Mile 3 8:19
  • Mile 4 8:25
  • Mile 5 8:32
  • Mile 6 8:16
  • Mile 7 8:08
  • Mile 9 8:18
  • Mile 10 8:48
  • Mile 11 8:25
  • Mile 12 8:24
  • Mile 13 8:05
  • .10 7:24

Which all adds up to 1:52:10 whoohoo! Unlike previous half marathons, I would completely stop running after the race. This race gave me all kinds of inspiration, so I will take the rest of this week off and pick it back up next week and shoot for a sub 1:45 at the Long Branch Half in May.
